Welcome to the British Studies Program!

Welcome to the 2007 British Studies Program! Dr. Welsh and I are very excited to be able to offer this course. We have some wonderful activities and classes planned for you. We hope that this will be a wonderful experience for all of us. As part of the course this summer, we will be spending several days in Edinburgh. Dr. Welsh and I spent sixteen days in England and Scotland last summer preparing for the course and we have some great activities and visits planned.

We are going to use this blog as part of the course this summer, but we thought we would use it beforehand as a getting-to-know-you tool before we leave. Please feel free to post any questions or comments you may have, in addition to an brief biography about yourself.

We look forward to meeting all of you.

Melissa Wright and Teresa Welsh

What a fantastic idea- using the blog for this course! I'm very familiar with using online course tools, as I take all of my courses online through the University of Illinois (we use Moodle technology). This is my fourth trip to London so I'm very anxious to see how LIS study is integrated into the trip. I'm hoping to see and learn things that I had never experienced/thought of before.

Looks great! I'd like more info about the optional trips to Salisbury and Canterbury. Are these already arranged? Do we need to reserve a spot?

Anyone else planning to train trip from Edinburgh through England? I'm thinking of going through Lake District to Salisbury to Oxford, maybe Brownsea Island then London.

Welcome Mandy and Mike. Dr. Welsh and I were planning a weekend trip to the Lake District with anyone who would like to join us.

The British end of the planning team is still finalizing the itinerary and so we will tell you more about the optional trips to Canterbury and Salisbury when everything is finalized. I do know that we are going to Stratford your first week there and will see MacBeth at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

I'm curious about how many people are involved in the program - from the facebook group it looks like everyone's in one big group regardless of the specific course/concentration they've taken. How are our individual classes broken out once we get to London?

There are 18 of you in the LIS class. Each course will have their own agenda and activities. The activities we have planned for the LIS course include those for all 3 tracks. The days when you are not participating in group activities, you will be allowed to work on your own research projects.

Am I the only guy on this trip?

thanks for clarifying!! :o)

The lake district is GORGEOUS - been there once before. I would definitely be interested in joining you whenever you plan the trip!

I'm hoping to do some hiking in the Lake District. Perhaps 3 or 4 days. Have you done this?

Which Lake District train station are you planning to go to from Edinburgh?

We have the blog and blackboard. Why do we need both?
